Private jet vs first class
Is a private jet worth it over first class? For one person, rarely on price alone. For a group of four to eight, the cost per seat gets close, and the time you save is often two to three hours a trip.

Private jet vs commercial: door to door time
The real gap between a private jet and a commercial flight is the time on the ground. The flight itself takes about the same.
The table adds typical airport time to each flight. For airlines we count about three hours and fifteen minutes of check in, security, boarding and baggage. For a private jet we count about thirty minutes.
| Route | Flight time | Airline, door to door | Private jet, door to door | Time saved |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| London to Paris | 1 h 05 min | 4 h 20 min | 1 h 35 min | 2 h 45 min |
| London to Geneva | 1 h 30 min | 4 h 45 min | 2 h | 2 h 45 min |
| New York to Miami | 3 h | 6 h 15 min | 3 h 30 min | 2 h 45 min |
| Los Angeles to Las Vegas | 1 h 10 min | 4 h 25 min | 1 h 40 min | 2 h 45 min |
| London to Nice | 1 h 55 min | 5 h 10 min | 2 h 25 min | 2 h 45 min |
| New York to Los Angeles | 5 h 30 min | 8 h 45 min | 6 h | 2 h 45 min |
On short trips the saving is bigger than the flight. That is why day trips such as London to Geneva and back work so well by private jet.

Private jet vs first class: cost per person
A first class ticket is priced per seat. A private jet is priced per aircraft, so the comparison depends on how many of you fly.
The table splits the lowest one way price of the usual jet by four guests and by a full cabin. Compare it with what you would pay for flexible first or business class on the same day.
| Route | Typical jet | Whole jet from | Per person, 4 guests | Per person, full cabin |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| London to Paris | Turboprop | $3,000 | $800 | $400 |
| London to Geneva | Very light jet | $5,100 | $1,300 | $1,000 |
| New York to Miami | Very light jet | $10,300 | $2,600 | $2,100 |
| Los Angeles to Las Vegas | Turboprop | $3,200 | $800 | $400 |
| London to Nice | Very light jet | $6,600 | $1,700 | $1,300 |
| New York to Los Angeles | Midsize jet | $32,500 | $8,100 | $3,600 |
Flexible first class across the Atlantic often costs $6,000 or more one way. On short European routes there is rarely a first class cabin at all, only business class.
What first class gives you
First class on a good airline is comfortable and good value for one traveller. It still runs on the airline timetable.
- A lie flat seat or suite on long flights
- Lounges, fast track and chauffeur service on some airlines
- A low price per person when you fly alone
- Fixed departure times and large airports only
For a solo traveller on a long flight, first class is often the smarter buy. We say so when it is.
What a private jet gives you
A private jet trades a higher total price for time, privacy and control. Those matter most for groups and short trips.
- You choose the departure time and the airport
- Private terminals with no queues
- The whole cabin for your group, pets included
- Changes on the day, and same day returns
If you fly as a group, compare the total cost with everyone in business class. The gap is often smaller than you expect.
Private plane vs private jet
People say private plane and private jet as if they were the same. A turboprop plane and a light jet differ in a few ways that affect your trip.
Here is how a typical turboprop compares with a typical light jet, both seating about six. Figures come from our price list for 2026.
| Turboprop plane | Light jet | |
|---|---|---|
| Cruise speed | About 270 knots | About 420 knots |
| Nonstop range | About 1,600 miles | About 1,950 miles |
| Seats | 6 to 8 | 6 to 7 |
| Per hour | $2,600 to $3,600 | $4,200 to $5,800 |
| Runways | Short and mountain strips | Most business airports |
| Cruise altitude | Up to about 30,000 ft | Up to about 45,000 ft |
Under 90 minutes, a turboprop is often the better buy. Above two hours, the jet wins on time and comfort.
Shared vs full private jet
Shared private jet flights sell single seats on a fixed schedule, often between busy US cities. You pay for one seat and fly with people you do not know.
A full charter costs more in total but every detail is yours: time, airport, passengers and pets. For three or more people, it is usually the better deal.
Private jet vs commercial safety
Scheduled airlines have the strongest safety record of any form of transport. Charter operators fly under the same national regulators and need their own air operator certificate.
Standards still vary between operators, so the choice of company matters. Every operator we book passes the checks on our safety standards page.
Private flight vs commercial flight: how to decide
There is no single answer. These four questions settle it for most trips.
How many people are flying?
One or two travellers usually do better in first or business class. From four people up, a private jet starts to compete on cost per seat. With six or more on a short route, it often wins.
How long is the flight?
On flights under three hours, the airport time is a large part of the trip, so a private jet saves the most. On a 12 hour flight the saving is the same in hours but smaller as a share.
How fixed are your plans?
Airlines charge for changes and fly on their timetable. With a charter, the jet waits for you within crew duty limits, and the return can move to suit your day.
Charter flight vs commercial on price
Compare the total, not the ticket. Add up these costs for everyone flying.
- Flexible fares bought at short notice
- Extra hotel nights and lost working time
- Transfers from a distant hub airport

Private jet vs commercial questions
The questions people ask when they compare a private jet with first class or business class. Prices are typical for 2026.
Is a private jet cheaper than first class?
For one or two people, almost never. For four or more on a short route, a light jet often costs about the same per person as flexible first or business class bought late. The price is for the whole aircraft, so every extra guest lowers the share.
How much time does a private jet save?
Usually two to three hours per trip. You arrive 15 to 30 minutes before departure instead of two or three hours, and you skip the baggage belt on arrival. Smaller airports closer to town save more time on the drive.
Is a private jet safer than flying commercial?
Major airlines have the best safety record of any form of transport. Licensed charter operators are also tightly regulated and audited. The key is the operator, which is why we check each one before we book.
What is the difference between a private plane and a private jet?
A private plane is any aircraft you charter, including turboprops with propellers. A private jet has jet engines, flies higher and faster and costs more per hour. On trips under 90 minutes the difference in time is small.
Are shared private jet flights worth it?
Shared and semi private flights sell single seats on set schedules, mostly in the US. They cost less than a full charter but you lose control of timing and the passenger list. For a group, a full charter is usually better value.
