What is an FBO? FBO meaning in aviation
In aviation, an FBO is a fixed base operator: the private terminal where you meet your jet. You arrive 15 minutes before departure, a car drives you close to the steps, and there are no airline queues.

What does FBO stand for in aviation?
FBO stands for fixed base operator. It is the business that runs the private side of an airport, from the lounge to the fuel truck.
The term comes from the early days of US aviation. Pilots who flew from town to town were itinerant, while companies that stayed at one airport and sold fuel, repairs and flights had a fixed base. The name stuck.
In Europe and the Middle East you will also hear handling agent, general aviation terminal or business aviation terminal. For passengers they all mean the same thing: a quiet building next to the ramp, away from the airline halls.
FBO also has other meanings. On a check or a bank account it is short for “for the benefit of”, which has nothing to do with flying.
FBO airport meaning for passengers
When someone says FBO airport, they usually mean one of two things. Both affect how your private flight works on the day.
- A business airport where FBOs are the only terminals, such as Teterboro, Van Nuys or Farnborough
- A big airline airport with a separate private terminal on the far side of the field, such as Luton or Nice
- In both cases, you never enter the airline terminal
Busy business airports often have several FBOs side by side. Your quote names the one your operator uses and gives the exact address for your driver.

FBO services: what happens inside
FBO services cover everything between your car and the aircraft door. Passengers see the lounge, but most of the work happens on the ramp.
Lounge and check in
A quiet lounge with coffee, Wi Fi and restrooms. Check in takes a minute: the staff confirm your name and ID, and that is it.
Ramp and baggage
Ground crews park and tow the aircraft and load your bags. Large items such as skis or golf clubs go straight from your car to the hold.
Fuel
Most FBOs sell fuel to the aircraft they handle. In the US, buying fuel often reduces or waives the ramp fee.
Customs and immigration
At many international airports, border checks happen inside the FBO or at the aircraft. It takes minutes rather than an hour.
Crew services
Pilots get a rest area, weather briefings and flight planning support. Rested crews are part of a safe flight.
Cars to the aircraft
With notice, your driver can often meet you next to the aircraft. Where the airport does not allow this, the FBO shuttles you across the ramp.
Not every FBO offers everything on this list. Small airports may have one desk and a fuel truck, while the large ones run conference rooms, showers and hangars.
FBO vs commercial terminal
The difference between an FBO and an airline terminal is mostly time. A private flight saves two to three hours on the ground on a typical trip.
The table compares a normal day at a large airline terminal with a departure from an FBO. Times are typical and vary by airport and country.
| Airline terminal | FBO | |
|---|---|---|
| Arrive before departure | 2 to 3 hours | 15 to 30 minutes |
| Check in and bags | Queues and bag drop | Bags go from your car to the aircraft |
| Security | Shared screening lanes | Short check, often in the lounge |
| Passport control | Main hall, often with queues | Inside the FBO or at the aircraft |
| Walk to the aircraft | Gates, buses and jet bridges | A few steps across the ramp |
| Arrival | Baggage belt and taxi rank | Car waiting at the FBO door or the aircraft |
These minutes add up. On a one hour flight, the FBO can halve the door to door time of the whole trip.
FBO fees: who pays and how much
FBOs charge the aircraft operator, not the passenger. On a charter, these fees are already inside your price.
The main charges are a handling or facility fee, ramp parking and sometimes a fee for overnight hangar space. In the US, ramp fees for a light jet often start around a few hundred dollars and fall when the aircraft buys fuel. At busy European airports and for large jets, handling can reach several thousand.
Landing fees go to the airport itself and are separate from the FBO. Both appear in the cost of your flight, and we list them in the quote when they are unusually high.
How to use an FBO on flight day
Your first departure from an FBO is simpler than any airline trip. These are the steps.
- Give your driver the FBO address from your booking, not the airline terminal.
- Arrive 15 to 20 minutes early, or 30 minutes for an international flight.
- Show your ID or passport at the desk. Staff take your bags.
- Walk or ride across the ramp to the aircraft when the crew is ready.
- On arrival, your car meets you at the FBO or next to the aircraft.
Running late? Call your advisor. A private jet waits for you, within the limits of crew duty time and airport slots.

Airports marked business only have no airline traffic, so every terminal there is an FBO. At the others, the FBO sits apart from the airline terminal with its own entrance.

FBO meaning and how private terminals work
Most people first meet the word FBO on a charter confirmation. Here is what it means in practice and how to get the most from it.
FBO aviation basics
A fixed base operator is a private company licensed to work at an airport. Some FBOs belong to big networks with dozens of locations. Others are family businesses with one building and a hangar.
Is an FBO the same as a private terminal?
For passengers, yes. The FBO runs the private terminal, but it also handles fuel, parking and crew services that you never see. In Europe the same role is often split between the airport and a handling agent.
FBO near me: finding the right one
Your FBO depends on the airport, and the airport depends on where you start. Each airport page on our site lists the private terminal, the drive time and the closest alternatives. Your advisor confirms the right one with every quote.
Can anyone walk into an FBO?
An FBO is open to passengers, crews and the people meeting them. You need a flight booked through it to go airside.
- Passengers on a private or charter flight
- Drivers and guests meeting arriving passengers
- Pilots and crews of visiting aircraft

What does FBO stand for?
In aviation, FBO stands for fixed base operator. It is the company that runs the private terminal and the services around it at an airport. Outside the US, the same business is often called a handling agent or a business aviation terminal.
What is an FBO airport?
There is no special type of airport called an FBO airport. The phrase usually means an airport with one or more FBOs, or a business airport such as Teterboro or Farnborough where private terminals are the only terminals.
Do I pay the FBO when I charter a private jet?
No. On a charter, handling and facility fees are part of the quote, and the operator settles them with the FBO. You only pay extra for things you order yourself, such as a hotel car or special catering.
How early should I arrive at an FBO?
About 15 to 20 minutes before departure for a domestic flight, and 30 minutes for an international one. Passports are checked in the terminal or at the aircraft, depending on the country.
Can friends meet me at the FBO?
Usually yes. Most FBOs have a lounge where people can wait, and drivers can meet you at the door or, with notice, next to the aircraft. Some airports limit ramp access, so ask your advisor in advance.
What does FBO mean on a check?
On a check, a bank account or an IRA, FBO is short for “for the benefit of”. It names the person who receives the money and has nothing to do with aviation.
